New Jersey throws just about everything at your car. Between road salt in winter, pollen in spring, blazing summer sun, and falling leaves in autumn, your vehicle's finish and interior take a beating no matter what you drive. If you have ever wondered how often you should be getting a professional detail, the short answer is: at least once per season, or roughly every three months.
At Avanti Car Care, we detail vehicles across Bergen County every week, and we see firsthand how quickly the elements can undo an unprotected finish. Below, we break down what each season does to your car and why a consistent detailing schedule is the best way to protect your investment.
Spring: Pollen, Tree Sap, and Rain
Spring in Bergen County brings a welcome change in weather, but it also brings a thick coat of yellow-green pollen that settles on every surface. Pollen is more than an eyesore — it contains acids that can etch into clear coat if left sitting in the sun. Tree sap is another springtime hazard, especially if you park under oaks, maples, or pines. Once sap hardens, it bonds to paint and becomes much harder to remove without professional tools.
A spring detail should include a thorough exterior wash and decontamination to strip embedded pollen and sap, followed by a layer of protection to shield the paint for the months ahead. Inside the cabin, spring is also a great time for an interior detail to remove the grime, salt residue, and allergens that accumulated over the winter.
Summer: UV Rays, Bug Splatter, and Heat
Summer brings long days of intense UV exposure. Ultraviolet light is the number-one cause of paint oxidation and fading, and it takes a toll on interior surfaces too — leather dries out and cracks, dashboards fade, and plastic trim becomes brittle over time. Bug splatter is another summer staple, especially after evening drives along highways and back roads in Bergen County. Bug residue is acidic and will etch clear coat if it sits for more than a day or two.
A summer detail focuses on removing bug splatter, tar, and road film from the exterior while applying UV-protective products to both paint and interior surfaces. If your car sits outdoors regularly, this is also the ideal time to consider a ceramic coating, which provides years of UV protection and makes bugs, bird droppings, and water spots far easier to clean off.
Fall: Leaf Debris, Moisture, and Early Frost
Autumn is beautiful in northern New Jersey, but falling leaves create problems most drivers do not think about. Wet leaves that settle on your hood, roof, or trunk release tannins — natural acids that stain paint if left in contact for even a few days. Leaves also collect in windshield cowls, door jambs, and wheel wells, trapping moisture that accelerates rust.
A fall detail clears these problem areas and lays down a protective layer before winter hits. We also recommend cleaning and conditioning your interior at this time, since tracked-in mud and moisture from fall rain can embed into carpets and floor mats.
Winter: Road Salt, Brine, and Freezing Temperatures
Winter is by far the harshest season for cars in New Jersey. Bergen County roads are treated with rock salt and liquid brine, both of which are extremely corrosive. Salt spray coats your lower body panels, wheel wells, undercarriage, and brake components, eating away at metal and clear coat alike. Even modern vehicles with factory undercoating are not immune — salt finds its way into every crevice.
Inside, winter brings its own set of problems. Wet boots track in salt, slush, and mud, grinding into carpets and staining leather or fabric seats. Moisture gets trapped in the cabin, fogging up windows and creating musty smells that linger.
A winter or late-fall detail should include a thorough exterior wash with underbody flush to remove salt, plus a strong sealant or coating to protect the paint through the rest of the season. An interior detail addresses salt-stained carpets, conditions leather against drying, and neutralizes trapped odors.
Our Recommendation: Quarterly Detailing at Minimum
For most Bergen County drivers, we recommend a full detail at least four times per year — once each season. This keeps your paint protected year-round, prevents contaminants from causing permanent damage, and keeps your interior fresh and comfortable. If your car spends most of its time outdoors, if you have kids or pets, or if you drive frequently on highways, you may benefit from even more frequent visits.
Drivers who invest in a professional ceramic coating can stretch the interval between full exterior details, since the coating does much of the heavy lifting in repelling contaminants. However, even coated vehicles need regular maintenance washes and at least two full details per year to stay in top condition.
If your paint already shows swirl marks, light scratches, or dull spots, consider adding a paint correction before your next protective service. Correction removes the damage at its source, and the results last much longer when followed by a coating or sealant.
